While this is technically a solo album by Tom Petty without The Heartbreakers, many of the bands do play on the disc. Of all of his albums, solo or otherwise, this is the most satisfying one for me.
The album starts off with what is my favorite song on the disc, Free Fallin'. In fact, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. The song is so moody and mellow and has to be one of the best songs to sing along with, especially when the chorus kicks in. The song I Won't Back Down is also strong and great to listen to when a little pick-me-up is needed in your life.
Tom Petty is a bit of a jokester, but it doesn't usually come across in his songs. However, he puts this side of himself on display with the great and fun tune Yer so Bad. The lyrics are great and humorous, while the music is nice and tight. A Face in the Crowd is a beautiful ballad filled with emotion.
A couple of the songs don't do much for me. I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better is a Byrd's cover that comes off as a bit unnecessary as it doesn't really add anything exceptional to the song. While the album closer, Zombie Zoo, is a bit too goofy of a song for my taste.
This disc is full of great songs, many of which were hit singles. If you like the song Free Fallin', I'd suggest checking out the rest of the songs here.
