These ceramic figurines based on the drawings and paintings of a German nun, Maria Innocente Hummel, are so endearing no wonder they have a broad appeal. I have my grandmother's which was handed down to me. It is the Merry Wanderer, the reproduction of the life-size Hummel which graces the entrance of the Goebel Company in Rodental, Germany, the manufacturer. The cute, young lad with the sweet, child-like face is dressed in an orange shirt with corresponding trousers and a green jacket. A lock of hair is peeking out from underneath the black topper. He is carrying an orange umbrella and a gray suitcase. The unique porcelain veneer which is bisque fired, glazed and painted with oil and turpentine allows for a non-shiny, distinctive colour palette.
A figurine to enjoy and treasure.
