I bought this book, ‘The Name Book’ by Dorothy Astoria about two months ago. This book contains 10, 000 names along with their meaning. I know I haven’t been pregnant yet (although this book is targeted to the expecting couple), and it’s very early to buy this kind of book but it makes me curious about finding people’s names and their meanings. And my hubby wouldn’t mind at all if we pick our children’s names earlier lol… The book is 482 pages thick, and comes with a slight history of people’s names. Every name listed in it comes with its variation/derivation as well. For example, if you’re looking for the name GORDON (the capital letter shows the original name) then it will be followed by its variation/derivation, Gordan, Gordie, Gordy (the derivation is written in small letter). Then the name’s origin (culture and language) comes after that (GORDON is from Anglo-Saxon). Next we will be given the literary meaning behind that name and later on the implied religious meaning. The last is the Bible’s verse reflecting that name.
I may not be a very religious person but when reading this book, especially on the Bible’s verse section, I was so touched. I mean, I could never imagine that behind a name, there was a reflection of God’s grace in it. And what’s more, is that at the end of the book, there are several appendixes, namely the Name List on the Bible (Girl’s Names as well as Boy’s Names), Birth Stone and Flowers, The Family Tree scheme from the father as well as from the mother (which requires us to fill in the scheme with our ancestors’ names), A blank list of Favorite Daughter’s Names and Son’s Names by the mother’s choice, and consecutively by the father’s choice (top ten names for each). This is a very interesting book indeed! I have just picked and written some names, and later, when I’m finished, I’ll let my hubby do the same… Love it! Incredible book!
