I think you have to be a Jane Austen fan to get it.
At least if you know Pride and Prejudice forward and back, it definitely helps your appreciation of this very unique book.
This book is an adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, a classic novel of regency society. Grahame-Smith has taken Austen's words and added zombies. Let the fun begin!
I love Jane Austen. I am a fan from way back. I wouldn't want anyone to damage or in any way hurt her work or reputation. This book doesn't do that at all. In fact it pays homage to Austen in a very clever way.
The zombies are added in Austen's own style, so nothing seems out of place or even unreasonable until you think too much about it. In this book, Elizabeth and her sisters are not only young ladies on the lookout for wealthy husbands but they are also accomplished zombie killers. This is important because England seems to be overrun with the undead and you have to know how to fight or you can easily become one of them.
It's interesting how this mayhem changes but adds to the story of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy and the rest of the characters in this book.
If you like Pride and Prejudice, check this out. Just don't be snooty about it. It's all for fun!
