I grew up with Little Women. It has long been one of my favorite books, and it has been made into a movie many times. This last movie with Susan Serandon, Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Gabriel Byrne, Eric Stoltz and many other talented actors was a beautiful recreation of this beautiful book.
Sometimes a wonderful book is somehow cheapened or even ruined by a terrible movie. This was not the case with Little Women. The movie followed the book very well, and the way that the movie was made seemed to pay tribute to the book instead of to steal it away.
I loved Winona Ryder's Jo. I thought it was perfect the way she hopped around and theatrically stomped through rooms and across the lawn singing at the top of her lungs. Claire Danes was a sweet Beth. And a very young Kirsten Dunst was a wonderful Amy. In fact I enjoyed every performance in thsi movie. The casting was inspired.
This has become one of my favorite movies. The extras in this edition of the DVD are engaging and entertaining.
