If you bought the Apple TV when it originally came out and felt let down at the amount of features for the price you paid, the new version will erase any frustrations or limitations that the first version presented you with... because well, how do I say this? Its awesome.
The new and improved Apple TV provides us with:
- A new organizational platform (easier to find things you want)
- The iTunes store right there on your TV
- Movie Rentals
- Improved picture galllery which can pull from your.Mac account, Flickr or your iPhoto.
As far as features go, being able to access the iTunes store through your TV was one that should have existed from the beginning. No more of that downloading on your computer, waiting for it to load, syncing the apple tv to the computer and then finding it in your library. Now we simply turn on the device, search right there on the TV and download, download, download!
Movies are $2.99 to rent, $3.99 for HD versions and users must start to watch them within 30 days of purchasing and downloading. After a rented movie has been started, you have 24 hours to finish it. Everything you buy will of course be sync'd back to your computer to be watched there or transferred to your ipod if you wish to continue watching it outside of your living room.
The price of the new Apple TV has been decreased. (can I get a hallelujah?) The 40GB and 160GB now sell for $229 and $329, respectively.
And best of all, that upgrade to put this new software on all older Apple Tvs? It is completely Free. Its nice to know that sometimes we will still see that user friendly mindset, I was starting to worry about the recent charging-for-everything trend. Thanks Apple! Your minnions appreciate it.
