Apple has made its name by providing very uncluttered and focus designs in just about every product they make. Just look at the fully contained iMac. The Apple remote is a perfect example of a product that has a very very clean design and does what it does well. It is focused. Therefore, you aren't going to program it to close the powered curtains and dim the lights. It is however going to do exactly what you want it to do - the basics in navigation.
Many call this Apple's gum stick remote. Hold it in your hands and you can quickly see why it's about ¼" think (I believe that's about two pieces of Juicy Fruit and it is not much wider or longer than that stick of your favorite gum. The weight matches its small size.
Apple had included this with all of their computers and the AppleTV, but it appears they are now listing it as a purchase option.
Conclusion: If you have a Mac, buy the remote. It is clean, uncluttered and does the basic navigation functions that we use most. If you insist on a multifunction remote see the Harmony 880 remote.
