We live in a ranch house which is quite spread out. We had a 2-phone cordless phone system which just didn't fit the bill. We had plug-in phones at various locations; but none of them were within arm's reach. I started to do some research on cordless phones with answering machines and was quite pleased when I found the AT&T EL52419 DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System. There was a rebate in effect at the time that I purchased the system; and I've noticed that the retail price has come down significantly since I bought the telephones, so shop around!
Not only does the system have four cordless phones; but each phone can be used as an intercom. If I'm in the computer room, which is two large rooms away from the family room, my husband no longer has to shout. He simply picks up the phone (which is now conveniently plugged in by the side of his chair), presses "Int" "4" (the number of my phone); and Voila'...no more shouting! And, if for some reason we need each other in an emergency; these phones are a comfort to have around. The system is not expandable so be sure you get a system with enough handsets right at the start.
The set-up was extremely easy. You simply plug in the chargers (one for each phone), program the time, date and other features on one phone; and you're all set. The DECT 6.0 (Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication) is a new frequency band that provides superior voice quality, increased protection against wiretapping and better range than the old 2.4GHz and 5.9GHz systems without interfering with wireless routers. We recently installed a wireless router and have had no problems with the system.
Each phone has a Speakerphone option which I find invaluable when troubleshooting with Computer Tech Support. You simply lay the phone down, push the Speakerphone button; and you can hear and be heard loud and clear.
Depending on the length of each message (individual messages can be up to 4 minutes long), the answering system can record up to 99 messages. The number in the message counter will flash when you have new messages. There is also an alert tone that can be turned on which will beep every 10 seconds until all messages are reviewed. The digital answering system allows remote access to messages. You can also leave "memos" for yourself as a reminder or for someone else in the house on the base unit. The memos are played back the same way as messages.
Other features are Caller ID/Call Waiting, 50 Name/Number Caller ID History, Call Screening, lighted display and keypad and much more. Some of these features require an additional service on your phone line.
The Answering System comes with one base, 4 cordless handsets, 3 accessory handset chargers, telephone line cord, 4 AC power adapters, 4 batteries (one for each handset), 4 battery compartment covers and User's Manual.
If you're looking for a reliable, multi-function phone system, I hope you'll check out the AT&T EL52419 DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System.
