Bottom line: This is an original (not truely anime) cartoon that can be enjoyed by parents, college students, elderly and kids alike. This show is by far the most addictive cartoon series on the air today. Avatar is very un-Nickelodeon in that the story which this cartoon is based upon is surprisingly complex (not silly randomness) despite the fact that each episode is less than a half hour long. The characters are well developed also, each balancing one another and becoming more complicated with each episode. Nearly ever episode is carefully crafted so that themes and character histories come together. Essentially the viewer find themselves puting together pieces of a puzzle with each episode. Action scenes are outstanding as the duels are not simply air, water, fire and rock randomly being shot at opponents(as you might expect with your typical element cartoon). Each element is based on a different form of kung fu from a different region, and is symbolically represented by a different season. Despite all of this artistry, kids will love this show. There is much humor and light-heartedness among the drama created. Comic relief occurs frequently and the strange animals provide novelty for the young ones.
