So it is far, but the beauty of nature awaiting from this island is remarkable. From Cebu City, one needs to ride a bus or v-hire towards Hagnaya for around three hours more or less. From there ride the express ferry boat or a fast craft. But if you have your own car, you can take this along with you via riding a RO-RO boat. When you arrive at the port ther will be a lot of locals who will offer you different resorts within the island. Budyong is one of the cheapest yet very remarkable place. A minimum of Php500 will get you a seafront cottage.
What I like about this place is the sorroundings, you will see locals skim boarding and would happily pose with you and if you are friendly enough, they will even give you free skim boarding lessons. Tourists both local and international dwell on this place especially during the holy week because this is the only place that was given a special rule. As you know with christianity, every holy week we are advised to abstain from eating meat especially pork.Bantayan however is different, on 19th Pope Leo XII granted an exception to this place because fisherfolks could not go fishing during holyweek because of the water conditions. History states that in order for the bantayanons to survive, they resorted into eating meat despite of the abstinence ruling. Up until now, this has become a tradition. In fact it is too grand of a tradition that every holy week, the whole island comes to life feasting on roasted pork or "lechon" as what we call it. This island will be dwelled with a lot of people, celebrating the death of the lord in a very unique way, through lots of parties in every resort. Local and foreign bands would come to visit this place. Truly bizzare indeed.
I haven't been in this island during a holy week but its popularity is heard by every cebuanos.
One good thing about the place also are the centuries old churches and the ever famous boneless dried fish and squid yum yum.
One bad thing here though is if it is just a regular night, there is nothing much to do in the resort, you'd have to go out, ride a pedicab or "sikad" as what we call it to get to a local pub.
Update On Mar 16, 2010: It is almost holyweek so this island would come to life once again. There had been a lot of programs lined up for the event already and for sure the Island rudebhoys and rudegyals (reggae enthusiasts) will be there to provide entertainment.
For those who can come here in Cebu, see you at Bantayan Island this April.
