Bernat Softee is a wonderfully soft and smooth yarn, in a light weight. I love the way it feels, and think that it must be the best yarn to make into garments or blankets that will be next to your baby’s skin.
This is a baby-weight, 100% acrylic yarn. This yarn is thinner than sport weight. The solid colors come in 5 oz. skeins with 395 yd, and the ombres have 4.25 oz. with 333 yds. There are currently 32 colors offered, several solid colors- both traditional pastels and some brights, and the rest are variegated (ombre). It does have dye lots, so you’ll need to purchase enough matching skeins to complete a project. The full selection can be seen at Bernat. The one I am using right now is called Summer Ombre. It shades from rose to white, sage green, and yellow.
Projects made with Bernat Softee Baby Yarn are machine washable and dryable.
The yarn is three ply and wound tightly, so it holds together well. It doesn’t split or catch when either knitting or crocheting.
I bought this to use as one of the yarns in a poncho I’m making for a young girl. I’m using it as alternating rows of a crocheted puff stitch. In one of the photos you’ll see it in every other puff stitch row. (The deep lime green is a different yarn, Red Heart Shimmer.)
These sections of variegation are fairly short, 18 inches or fewer. In the puff stitch you can see that sometimes there is more than one of the colors in a single puff. In the knitted sample, it’s easy to see how often the color changes.
As is so often the case now, there are free patterns on the wrappers, and also on the web site. The pattern on the wrapper of the skein I bought does not seem to appear on the web site, so if you see one you like, you should be sure to buy that skein.
This yarn both knits and crochets up smoothly. In fact, the most remarkable thing about this yarn is its surface texture. Although it’s 100% acrylic, it feels almost like cotton. There isn’t going to be anything ticklish or irritating about a garment made from this yarn.
The package suggests that you knit this with size 6 needles, and that 22 stitches and 30 rows will be 4 x 4 inches. My swatch is 25 stitches by 20 rows, knitted on size 5 needles. It measures 4.5 by 3 inches. Your gauge may vary from mine. I’m surprised that this is so similar to the swatch I knitted with the Red Heart Sweet Baby yarn, because that yarn is clearly thicker. In fact, I’m pulling up 5 loops in each puff stitch to make it the same thickness as 4 loops with the Sweet Baby or Shimmer yarn.
The cottony feel of Bernat Softee Baby Yarn is absolutely wonderful. I plan to use this brand for baby clothing or blankets whenever there is a color available that will give the effect I want for knitting or crocheting projects.
