The first Christopher Moore novel I read was You Suck: A Love Story, and I absolutely loved it. After reading the novel, I found out that it was actually a sequel to Moore's Bloodsucking Fiends. So, having enjoyed reading You Suck so much, I promptly obtained a (frugally priced) copy of Bloodsucking Fiends. Well, it turns out the first book wasn't as good as the second one. In fact, if I had read Bloodsucking Fiends first, I'm not sure I would have bothered to read any more of Moore's novels. It wasn't as funny, and the main characters seemed different - not quite as authentic. Having already read the sequel, it was obvious that Moore didn't have a feel for these characters yet; it's as if he was still getting to know them. So, the story had a little bit of a hollow feel to it. It was entertaining though, and I read through it, because it gave some background and insight into the sequel that I enjoyed so much. If I had read this novel first, I would not have needed that, and I probably would have finished reading it at least, but I'm not sure if I would have picked up another Christopher Moore novel. Again, I am SO glad that was not the case; I would have missed out on a wildly fun and entertaining read. Do yourself a favor, and pick up You Suck FIRST.
