Some of my favorite games are in the new category of 'casual' games intended for non-traditional gamers, like Cooking Mama and Wii Sports. This game for the Nintendo DS has been hyped up and advertised on shows like Oprah, so I decided to give it a shot. The game is supposed to help you keep your brain young, by encouraging you to do simple math and english exercises every day in short sessions. It is novel and fun. Unfortunately it starts off on a sour note with sloppy voice detection - it asks you to quickly identify the colors of words, but it has a hard time recognizing the word "blue" for some reason. The math and vocabulary exercises are very simple, but you do feel your brain getting a workout. I was able to stick to it for around two weeks. Then I started missing days. When I eventually logged back on the game scolded me. This is supposed to encourage you to play more, but I really don't appreciate a game scolding me. It ended up having the opposite intended effect, where I stopped playing it. So, it is fun for a while, but if you're like me, you'll get fed up with it quickly. Oh, and the added sudoku are nice if you're a sudoku freak.
