Fannie Flagg has written many novels including Welcome to the World Baby Girl and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. In her latest novel, Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven, she continues to write in her wonderful southern style. Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven is the story of a small Missouri town and its residents.
The story focuses on Elner Shimfissle, her niece Norma Warren and Norma’s husband Macky. The story opens as Elner falls out of the fig tree after being attacked by wasps. Macky finds Elner and sends her to the hospital. He contacts his wife, who has a tendency to be overly dramatic; little by little every resident of this small Missouri town learns the news of one of their beloved citizens. As each resident and family finds out that Elner has passed away, they all reminisce on how they met her and how she changed their life.
Meanwhile, Elner’s reported death sends Elner on her own adventure where she is reunited with many old friends and family members. Elner even gets to meet some her of her own heroes including one named Raymond who sits at a desk and the name on the desk is the Supreme Being. Is Elner gone for good? Will Norma survive? Read the book.
