Carlson’s Solar D Gems supplements taste great with a light lemon flavor. That may seem strange since they're made of Norwegian Cod Liver Oil and most people who have to take Omega 3’s tend to think fish oil stinks and tastes horrible. I would have to say that with products other than Carlson Solar D Gems that’s been my experience too. However, these 4, 000 IU soft gel Vitamin D3 supplements both smell good and taste great. Since I have to take them for Vitamin D deficiency, I really appreciate that Carlson went that extra step and made them taste good and still be nutritionally useful.
The Vitamin D3 in the Carlson Solar D Gems is easily absorbed, and that’s another plus for me. I’ve tried prescription ergocalciferol and D2 and not had good results. At one point my Vitamin D levels were below 7, which is severely deficient. I was taking prescription strength supplementation for Vitamin D deficiency my doctor had ordered, with no results even after 3 months. However, within a month of switching to this over the counter Vitamin D supplement my levels were up to 40 and I was feeling better.
The bottles I buy have 360 soft gels in them. At first I worried they would gum together like so many vitamin supplements do when they are in the soft gel formulary. However, these keep very well and don’t stick even in the most humid Michigan summers. They have a very stable shelf life. Now, they aren’t exactly inexpensive, but at an average of $44.00 per bottle at the local health food store, they are definitely more economical in the 360 soft gel bottles instead of smaller denominations.
Carlson Solar D Gems have no artificial coloring. This was important to me in selecting a Vitamin D supplement, because I have blood allergies to certain food dyes, as well as skin irritations and reactions from others. This vitamin supplement clearly outlines the fillers and other ingredients on the label including natural lemon flavor, beef gelatin, glycerin, sorbitol and water. Of course, the main ingredients of Norwegian Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin E and Vitamin D3 are clearly marked as well as the levels of DHA and EPA in each serving. Unfortunately, if you are a vegetarian or vegan, the Carlson Solar D Gems won’t accommodate your vegetarian diet because they do contain beef. However, they are some of the best tasting Vitamin D I’ve found on the market and have solved my Vitamin D deficiency dilemma.
