I got this book for my 5-year-old daughter but it has become a favorite with all my younger children, 3, 5 and 7-years-old. This book is all about numbers and counting for young children.
Big bold colorful numbers will race each other to the top of the appletree. Kids will get to count and rhyme all the way from 1-20 and on the right page there is always the same rhyme:
1, 2, 3 ...
Will there be a
place for me?"
Next to that rhyme is number 0 looking to climb the tree like his friends.
From 20 kids start counting by tens all the way to hit 99, I find that little confusing but later you figure out why 99, not 100.
Bumblebees show up to the tree and numbers start falling out getting away from the bees. Now you are counting the same numbers for the other direction. My kids love finding those fallen numbers all over the tree.
Finally there is only number 10 left in the tree and 0 decides to join him and leap all the way to the top to join him. And what number do we get when 10 and 0 join? 100 of course! All other numbers join the 100 again and celebrate 0 as their hero.
At the end of the book there is all the numbers from 0 to 100 for letting your kids to practice. Louis Ehlert did the wonderful illustrations, all bold and easy to understand. Book is written by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambalt just like very popular Chicka Chicka Boom alphabet book.
Our book was published by Scholastic in 2006 and is soft covered. If I could choose again I would look for hardcover version because this book gets read a lot and is already pretty banged up!
So if you have a 3 to 7-year-old you are looking for a gift, this book would make a great gift! Kids just love laughing at those silly numbers and learn at the same time, I find this book very educational.
