When enjoying various water sports and activities you always want the peace of mind knowing your child is safe. Even if your child knows how to swim some activities require the use of a life jacket. We enjoy boating so a life jacket is mandatory for our daughter. We purchased an H2O Sports child size (30-50lb) jacket for her.
This life jacket is made of soft 1.5mm neoprene material and PVC inner foam which provides maximim buoyancy. The color is a bright pink which makes it easier to see in the water. They also have a bright blue one for boys.
It fits our daughter well and she does not protest it. It zips up the center and there are three adjustable straps. Two buckle along the waist and one that goes between the legs to ensure a good fit. We found it at Costco for $19.99, a great price!
An important note: This life jacket is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard as a Type III personal floatation device. This means it is intended for boating activities in calmer waters. What that means is it may not be the best choice for rougher waters with large waves. For the waters we venture out into this jacket works for us. If you plan on venturing out into the ocean you may want to find something better suited to keep your child safe.
Update On May 17, 2010: We bought this jacket two years ago for my daughter and she is still wearing it! We just bought the same one, in blue, for my son. If you are looking into children's life jackets I have to say this one has held up so well! After the lakes and the pool trips there isn't even a nick or tear or anything on my daughters, and thats after two years!
