I normally don't wear much eye mascara, but when I was in Wal-Mart a couple of months ago, I saw the Maybelline Colossal Thick Lash Mascara and thought I'd give it a try. I normally use the pink and green, but figured my thin eyelashes could use some help. The packaging is very bright - the tube is yellow and the packagine is purple. Fun, right? hmmm
Well, I purchased the brown/black and as soon as I opened the container, I noticed a strong scent/odor to the mascara. Not really like tar, but close enough. I went ahead and used it anyway, figuring the scent would go away and my eyes would stand out. They stood out alright! My eyeballs were red from irritation and I struggled all day to see. Of course when I got home, I washed my eyes off and put the mascara away. I decided to give it one more try about a week later, figuring maybe something else had irritated my eyes, but once again, my eyes were watering, the scent was gross and I had to take it right off.
A friend of mine is one of the worship leaders in our church and I noticed that she had the same mascara one day, so I inquired as to how she liked it? She said she hated it, but didn't want to waste it. She found it was clumpy after several uses and also did not like the smell.
So, I contacted Maybelline and they took the UPC code and product information from me and sent me $8 in Maybelline coupons, which more than covered me buying my favorite pink and green Maybelline eye mascara. The Maybelline Representative apologized that it irritated my eyes and was polite, but it was more like it was her job and she was to just send out coupons for a product that bothered not only me, but also my friend.
I would love to try another thick mascara but am afraid the same thing may occur. So over time, I will check out other mascara reviews and see what you all say about the product you use.
I would suggest though, if you have a sensitivity to eye shadows or mascaras, etc., that you hold off on this one. If it had only be me experiencing it, I would have thought it was only my eyes and skin, but since my friend, who lives almost 3 hours away and purchased hers at Target, but also had the same problem, I know we can't be the only ones out there who had reactions to it. And they were not in the same product batch, so it appears to me it's this mascara.
But take heart in knowing Maybelline will reimburse you so you can get something you CAN wear.
The only thing I liked about this mascara was the packaging.
Update On May 26, 2010: I just saw a display of this stuff the other day in Wal-Mart and my eyes hurt just by looking at it. I can't begin to say how disappointed I was in this stuff. And being that the only other person I knew that had this ALSO had the same eye irritation, you'd think Maybelline would have taken that awful scent out!
