marble topped gathering height table

The breakfast area in our home is a large space with a 12 foot high octagon shaped ceiling, so we needed a kitchen table that could fit the space and not get lost. We decided a counter, or gathering-height table, would be a good choice so we shopped around for one we liked. We took into consideration how hard our family is on furniture, that the kids do their homework on it, and that I use our kitchen table to do cookie and cake decorating there as well. Those factors steered us toward a table with a marble or granite top instead of a wooden or glass one. After months of searching we found the perfect one at Big Lots. The table does not have a specific name and was only called Counter Height Marble Topped Table. After we purchased it, I saw the same table offered at other retailers under the same description.

The counter-height marble-topped table is 54" by 54" square and is 36 inches high. The table top is a variegated marble in shades ranging from beige to dark brown. It is not a solid sheet of marble but rather smaller pieces, like tiles, that have been put together. It does however feel completely smooth to the touch and you can not feel any of the seams. The underside of the table is wood for stability. The legs of the table are solid wood with a rich brown finish. We have 4 counter height chairs that we purchased separately for it which give us plenty of space to spread out since there are only 4 of us. If we wanted we could actually fit 2 chairs on each side and seat 8.

Our Big Lots did not offer any kind of delivery so we had to arrange to pick it up ourselves. The table top comes in one large piece and we needed a pickup truck to get it home. It was also very heavy, weighing between 75-100 pounds, so it was a two-person job to move it. Once we got it home, it did need some assembly, which was basically adding the legs and securing them with several large bolts. Again, it took two people to flip the table upright, once the legs were attached.

We have had the table for almost a year now and say all the time how much we love it. The height works perfectly for us for both the usable space we have and how comfortable it is. We really like that our dog, who is very large, can not easily reach the top and help himself to whatever is there. My son is constantly bumping into or shaking the table so we have had to go through few times and tighten up the bolts to make sure they are secure. This has been the only issue we have had with the construction.

To clean the table top, I use a cleaner made especially for stone. The one I really like is 409 natural stone cleaner, which I buy at Lowes for around $3.00. The first few times I cleaned it I used a regular 409 product and the finish looked dull and I thought I ruined it. I then had to use some granite polish on it to restore the shine. It taught me that it is definitely worth it to spend a little more on a product made especially for stone than to mess up the finish on the table.
