"Deliver Us from Evil" is both fascinating and educational. The subtitle to this book is: "A Pastor's Reluctant Encounters With The Powers Of Darkness."
If the idea of demon possession seems too far out to you, you might want to do some research on the subject in Christian book stores. (Stay away from the occult though.) Too many Christians do not validate the existence of demons, and therefore many are left defenseless to struggle with the havoc they cause. This book is a biographical account of a pastor who comes face to face with demons and those they inhabit. Through the power of God, they are delivered from lifelong illnesses, addictions, negative behaviors, etc. Jesus told believers in the Bible, that in His name we would "cast out devils." I have ministered deliverance to those in bondage to demons, and it is truly a wonderful blessing to see people set free from the powers of darkness.
As you will see from reading this book, the deliverance ministry is NOT for the faint of heart, and should never be entered into lightly. But if we are believers, we have no reason to fear evil. Jesus gave us "power over all the power of the enemy" and told us "nothing shall by any means harm us." It's time for the church to walk in that delegated power, and start setting the captives free. People need help.
This book is actually quite funny in parts, and very serious in others. But I think you will find the story very touching as this pastor learns how to deal with the powers of darkness that are destroying people's lives. It is definitely a gradual learning experience for him, but in time he becomes an expert of sorts on deliverance.
Don Basham is now in heaven, but this book has been re-released by Chosen books, and is truly a classic on the subject. While much of it is elementary in the area of spiritual warfare and deliverance, it is a good place to get an overview of the subject.
