The Inspiron 1501 is a basic laptop produced by DELL. It is meant as a general multimedia PC, not a gaming machine. It came with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition, which is nice if you will be using it as a movie watching/music playing laptop. The screen is absolutely beautiful, and its potential can clearly be seen in the HD sample clip during Media Center setup. However, it only comes with a basic DVD/RW drive, so watching HD movies will be difficult unles you want to sacrifice portability by buying an external BluRay/HD-DVD drive or sacrifice hard drive space by storing large, high def movies on it. As a general, knockaround PC, it works very well, though the extra screen real estate is not needed as much, nor is the extra weight (it isn't terrible, but enough to not desire to carry it around with you). This PC simply cannot be used for any but the simplest gaming, mainly due to the integrated graphics card. In the past, there had been issues with installing Ubuntu Linux on these machines (and others with the same chipset), but that has been fixed in the latest edition of Ubuntu.
Overall, it is a good product for average use, but don't go into it expecting a mind-blowing experience.
