The Latitiude D630 is a new version of Dell’s business line of laptops. As such the D630 has several features intended for business users. The shell is a tough aluminum alloy unlike the flimsy plastic seen on Dell’s home line, and also helps the laptop weigh in at only 4lbs. The black and grey looks good but doesn’t stand out too much. There is a latch that holds the laptop closed, which is nice and feels secure even after long use. The D630 features a 14.1” screen at 1440x900, only available in matte with no gloss coating. The screen is large with a sharp resolution, but isn’t the brightest screen available on the market. It’s great for doing word processing work and browsing the web, but the relatively small viewing angle isn’t ideal for watching movies. In the same vein a single speaker has been included which is adequate for light music listening, but isn’t going to impress anyone.
The keyboard is strong and responsive like all of Dell’s business laptops. A touchpad with two sets of buttons is included which a TouchStick between the G and H keys. The base features 4 USB ports (2 side, 2 rear) which are extremely handy when on the move. The 9 cell battery is a cheap upgrade from Dell and will last about 3 hours depending on usage. The option for a second battery is included.
Overall the D630 is an excellent choice for a student or business person on the go. It fits well into a bookbag or suitcase without being too heavy, and has enough features and speed to keep you going.
