I've had Directv Satellite Service for about 5 years now and have been very pleased with them. I think the price of the various packages are very reasonable for the number of channels you get.
I have the Total Choice Plus Package which offers over 200 channels with about 35 of them being High Definition. The HD Channels are $10.00 additional each month but I think it is worth it. The sound and picture quality are much better than the original channels. Directv will continue to add more HD channels in the future.
If you have AT&T Residential Telephone service and Directv Satellite service, you can get up to $10.00 off your Directv bill if you call AT&T and "Bundle Your Package". If you want extra receivers in your home such as in the bedrooms, it will cost you about $5.00 extra for each receiver. I have one extra. With all the services I have mentioned, my bill currently runs about $65.00 a month. There are smaller packages for people who aren't such couch potatoes like myself.
The downside to having Directv is that during bad weather such as snow or rain, it can interfere with the quality of service. It can completely knock out the service all-together for a period of time. I have personally not had alot of issues with this but I don't have alot of bad weather where I live. If you are planning on going with this service, you may want to take this into consideration though.
Also, Directv is very good about having various Promotional Offers so, if you call for service, ask them what kind of deal they can give you. I just recently got $5.00 off my bill for switching to paperless billing which is part of their "Going Green" Promotion. Usually about one weekend out of the month they give free movie channels such as Showtime, HBO and Cinemax.
