The Discover Atlantis tour is the best way to get a taste of the amazing resort Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas. The tour was offered through our cruise ship the Royal Caribbean Monarch of the Seas but we opted to do it on our own which allowed us to go when we wanted and save a few dollars as well.

When you do this tour as a ship excursion, the trip includes a water taxi ride to Paradise Island and a regular taxi ride back. When you choose to do the tour on your own, there is no transportation included in the price. The cost of the water taxi is $3.00 per person each way. On the water taxi ride, they give you a little narrated tour where they point out sights like homes owned by famous people which might be nice if it's your first time there and want to see some of the island. When you take the water taxi though, you will have about a 10 minute walk from where it docks over to the resort. A regular taxi will run you $4.00 per person each way and is usually a 10 passenger van. The benefit to a regular taxi is that it will get you to the resort faster and drop you off right at the front door so there is no walking but you will not see very much on the way there.

When we arrived at the resort, we spent a few minutes walking around the beautiful lobby and casino area before going to the counter and purchasing our tickets. The cost for adults is $35.00 per person and although I did not have my son with me at the time, I seem to remember a child's ticket was $25.00. There are several tour packages available for different activities at various prices. For this tour you get a wristband that allows you access to the Dig, the ruins, the lagoon and to stroll around the grounds. You will not have access to the water park, the beach or be allowed in the pools although you will get to walk around some of the pool area.

When we purchased our tickets we were asked if we wanted to walk through alone or to have a guided tour which was included in the price. We had been through the Dig before decided to go ahead and take the tour take the tour. The tour turned out to be us, another couple and the guide who was very friendly and knowledgeable. She made sure to take her time, show us every inch of the Dig, answered any questions we had and even showed us the best places to stand for pictures which she offered to take of us.

The Dig is my favorite part of the resort. It is an aquarium that is themed to look like an archeological ruin from the mythological lost city of Atlantis. They have a wide array of different sea life displayed in amazing floor to ceiling tanks inside the exhibit.

The grounds of the resort are themed as well and are lush and tropical. As you wonder around you can visit the sharks and the stingrays in the lagoons that are around the property. At certain times of the day they offer feedings that are open for the public to watch which is very cool to see.

I am not a big fan of the Bahamas in general but I absolutely love this resort and can't wait until we can go back and actually stay there so we can explore it some more.
