My young son loves music and to dance to it. I am not exactly sure of the genre his particular style would fall into but he does get pretty funky. We are always playing music but sometimes Daddy needs a break from lullabies and Barney. Fortunately, I found one. Dog Train, by Boynton/Ford Productions, is a fantastic collection of songs for both the child and adult.

This CD comes with a 65 page hardcover book which has illustrations and lyrics along with short bios of all the contributing artists. That list includes the Spin Doctors, Hootie and the Blowfish, Five For Fighting and even Weird Al. Perhaps not all of these would be found in my own music collection but it sure beats listening to the Wiggles over and over. And I have to admit, some of the songs are pretty good and very funny. While my son got into the music, I was laughing at how true some of the lyrics were. I Need a Nap by Kate Winslet and Weird Al, (Don’t Give Me That) Broccoli by the Phenomenauts, and especially Wave Bye-Bye from Doshie Luther were fantastic.

If this isn’t enough to sell you on this 17 song musical CD plus book it gets even better. We bought this book for $5.00! And to top it off, we bought it at Kohl’s Department Store as part of the Kohl’s Cares for Kids program so at least part of the money goes to a good cause.

I would highly recommend this CD and book to anyone who can find it. It would be great as a gift, for parents and their kids, and even for teachers of younger children. For the price I am not sure you can find anything better, and knowing part of the proceeds go to help other children makes it twice as good. I still have to listen to Barney and the Wiggles, but at least every now and then we get to play some child appropriate music I can tolerate.
