Settlers of Catan is an award-winning game for a reason. It's extremely well-designed and suitable for a variety of ages and skill levels. There's enough randomness and luck to give the less experienced board gamers a chance, but enough strategy that you still need to use your brain to win. The idea is that you build roads, settlements, and cities to extract resources and take over the landscape and earn points. However, you can also earn points through methods that don't involve building. In my experience, it's usually difficult to tell who's winning. Unless you screw up early in the game, everyone tends to spend much of the game in a strong position, which makes the atmosphere more fun. The game manufacturer has also published some expansion sets, but I havent' tried them myself. One thing to keep in mind is that you need a minimum of three players, so get those family members or friends together and start settling!
