Even city folks like us enjoy one of our all time favorite cookbooks, Farm Recipes and Food Secrets from the Norske Nook. You won't find any delicious pictures of food in this cookbook, but oddly, it does not need them. I find the recipes stand on their own.
I love this cookbook! It was written and put together by Helen Myhre and Mona Vold. Helen Myhre is the farm wife that created the Norske Nook and made it into a group of successful restaurants where all kinds of people, even celebrities, came to Osseo, Wisconsion, just to taste one of her deliciously famous pies. Helen's cooking became so popular she even appeared on David Letterman.
Helen Myhre sold the business a while back, but I feel lucky to still be able to use her recipes. We have tried some of the recipes in this book and they are absolutely delicious. I also really enjoy all the stories Helen Myhre included in this cookbook. They are fun and entertaining. I love her style of writing. I feel like I am in her kitchen and she is telling me all her well kept secrets.
The cookbook is broken down into sections such as Breads, Rolls, Sweet Dough Treats. Pies, of course, along with Tortes, Pan Desserts and Puddings, and much more including meats and gravies. At the beginning of each of these sections are hints for each. Reading the hints is a real joy if you love to bake. Helen also includes Scandinavian Specialties and a small section on Good Kitchen Tools.
I did give this book a 4 rating in the author/illustrator/photographer section for lack of photos though. I would have loved to have seen pictures of all these awesome dishes Helen made, especially if they are anything like her mouth watering cover photo desserts.
I can't say enough good things about this cookbook. If you love delicious home style cooking and to-die-for apple pie, grab a copy of the Norske Nook Cookbook.
