I took the plunge and purchased a Garmin StreetPilot C-340. After the initial battery charging it was ready to go pretty much right out ot the box. It came pre-loaded with the current version of the US map so I was on my way. The GPS does what it says...gets me to my chosen destination with only occasional glitches. I put it to the test when I traveled out of state and it never steered me wrong. (No pun intended!) For a person that can get lost going around the block this was a time saver!
The settings are easy to navigate, and you can download custom points of interest to further personalize the device. With a paid subscription you can also keep up to date on the latest traffic conditions, which I don't have the need for myself. This model has text-to speech capabilities so instead of telling you to turn in '400 feet', it will tell you to turn on 'Main Street'. That's the reason I bought this particular model.
The downside is that you cannot press a button and instantly reverse the trip you just took without inputing all the info again. Also, there may be simpler ways to travel your route that the GPS doesn't offer unless you keep pressing the 'detour' button. I found this to be the case while traveling a familiar area in my home state. I suppose the device needs to choose one satellite route and go with it. Although it is loaded with hundreds of destinations, there are a few that aren't recognized so sometimes it's better if you enter an address instead of only a name.
Now that I've used my Garmin StreetPilot for a month, I can honestly say that I'd feel "lost" without it. I'm super happy with my first GPS purchase. I chose this navigation unit after much investigation into all of the GPS manufacturers. This is a good middle-of-the-line starter purchase.
