Not to be confused with the Getty Villa (also in LA), the Getty Center is a huge 4 building complex high on the hills above LA. They concentrate on a collection of art that ranges from the Middle Ages until today with great rotating exhibits on just about anything! Each building is a work of art in itself- with walkways, balconies and breathtaking views of the city and ocean that rival with the art for attention.
One of the best things about this museum is that you can go and spend all day in the gardens and outdoor cafes if you aren't an art lover and still have a wonderful time. The gardens are full of paths, water features, and open lawn spaces, great for some frisbee time and a picnic lunch. Because you only have to pay for parking, the best way to do this museum is to bring a carfull of friends and plan to do a picnic lunch/dinner planning to be there to experience sunset from this truley amazing vantage point. The Getty is open everyday except Monday but the hours vary, so check their web site for each day's hours and upcoming exhibits. www.getty.edu
