Four old men are members of a secret group they formed while in college called the Chowder Society. For 50 years, they've kept secret that has finally caught up to them. When one of their sons dies, they see a pattern of events develop and now believe that it's related to their secret.
The story is intriguing. A ghost is seeking revenge on those that caused her death. There are several unanswered questions and plot holes, which you need to accept if you want to enjoy the movie more.
The highlight is the atmosphere. Set in New England in the winter, it sets the bleak tone for the whole movie. The chowder society adds to it because the old men tell scary stories around a fire. The creepy music also adds to it.
The acting is very good. Four veteran actors play the old men including, Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and John Houseman. Craig Wasson, who played one of their sons, David Wanderley, is not in the same league with the older cast but I think he does sufficiently well.
Although Alice Krige is young here, she comes off as veteran actress in her role as Eva Galli/Alma Moble. Her performance is the best of the movie. She is sophisticated, sexy, and scary. She has a few nude scenes, so guys, check it out!
There is no gore or blood here but there are a few corpse SFX.
Ghost Story is an old-fashioned ghost story. It has both subtle and blunt terrifying scenes, This is recommended to all horror fans.
