This ironstone dinnerware is casual perfection in a classic Coca-Cola pattern.
We received a set of four places of large plates, large dessert bowls, and mugs about 10 years ago. Not one piece has broken yet although we use them throughout the summer for casual family use.
When I was considering reviewing these I assumed that they were no longer available for purchase. However I have found instead that they were open stock with the Gibson company and that they were more expensive than I had realized. The design was discontinued in 2006, but there are still pieces which can be purchased until they are gone. I’ve listed one web site where you can find them at the end of this review. The dinner plates (10 5/8 inches) sell for $9.99 each, the bowls (8 inches) are $4.99, and the mugs are also $4.99. There are a number of other types of pieces, including serving dishes available.
These are a nice heavy ironstone with a white finish and a double row of checks (red outer and black inner) around the edge. The Coca-Cola written logo appears three times within this border.
They are dishwasher and microwave safe. We particularly like the bowls as they are a little larger than our other everyday bowls and they hold extra salad, fruit, or ice cream for summer.
There are a couple of imperfections in one of the bowls, and knowing who gave us these, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were factory seconds, but I’ve never considered this a big issue because these would not be fancy company china anyway. They are just fun! I have to say that they have held up very well. As I mentioned we have not broken even one piece, and the designs are not wearing off nor have they gotten scratched up. While it is true that we no longer have a house full of boys, we have not particularly tried to be careful of these, so they receive no special treatment.
Somehow the Coca-Cola theme just goes well with casual American summers in my mind.
