The old school beat ‘em up from the 80s and early 90s was revived by former Capcom developer Clover Studio. The death of the Beat ‘em up was noted due to the growing variation offered by video games while the titles used repetitive enemies and combat, which generally grew to be boring—especially when someone was playing alone. Clover Studio’s God Hand managed to mix things up a bit, but ultimately the game will leaving you wanting more—just like its predecessors.
The story isn’t really anything that’s going to draw you in. You basically fight your way through legions of enemies and demons with the God Hand until you get to the final boss—nothing special. On the other hand, there are tons and tons of dirty and dark humor that will amuse plenty of mature players. The title is rated M, so don’t expect the kiddies to get their hands on this one. The violence may be nothing more than a Saturday morning cartoon, but the rest of the content is definitely off-limits.
Ultimately, God Hand is just slightly above average if not slightly beneath it. You’ll be racked with nostalgia for a few hours then realize why you dumped the genre in the first place.
