Being a Taylor fan since the Teardrops on my Guitar days, this album was greatly anticipated by myself, along with a countless amount of others. I didn't know what to expect from this album. I liked her earlier albums, but I didn't expect to love her new album, Speak Now, as much as I do.
Overall, I love every second of every song. It's filled with meaningful lyrics that not only are about Taylor's life, but also are about things that so many of her fans - young and old, male and female - can relate to. While the themes of love and relationships are shown all throughout the album, it doesn't get that repetitive, Taylor's lyrics keeping each song original and unique.
While I love every song, a few have stood out to me more than others, such as...
Back To December: This song is a bit different from many of her other songs. While still about a relationship, it takes a different approach to it. Instead of being angry about what happened, Taylor is actually apologizing for events that have happened during it that she regrets. "So this is me swallowing my pride, standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night..." It takes courage to apologize to someone, especially through a song released for the world to hear, and Taylor does so effectively, while still making a great song about it to share her experiences.
Never Grow Up: This song is also really different from a normal Taylor song, but in a completely new way. Instead of singing about love and relationships, this song is more about love and family, and, well, growing up. Sung like a lullaby, Taylor's soft voice backed with a guitar explain how when kids are young, they just want to grow up and be able to do things that "older kids do." "I just realized everything I have is someday gonna be gone..." Not only does Taylor capture what many kids think throughout their young lives, she also shows how, at one point, you will regret taking your childhood for granted and just want things to go back as there were - nice and easy.
Enchanted: This song is easily my favourite throughout the album. Everything about it I love. The instruments throughout it are beautifully played, and the lyrics throughout the song give the feeling of how it is to meet someone new, for the first time, who might just be *that* person in your life. The lyrics throughout this song are also beautiful, and express how Taylor, and many girls, feel about that person. "I'll spend forever wonder if you knew.. This night is flawless, don't you let it go, I'm wonder-struck, dancing around all alone..." "My thoughts will echo your name until I see you again.." Lyrics such as these really show how it feels being in love with someone, constantly thinking about them, hoping to see them again, and hoping they feel the same way too, feelings and thoughts that everyone has experienced during their life.
Long Live: Probably my second favourite of the album. I love the meaning of this song - she's taking time to thank all those who have helped her get to where she is now. What makes it even better is that it had a storybook medieval theme, talking about kings, queens, castles, and dragons. "...And force us into a goodbye if you have children someday, when they point to the pictures, please tell them my name.. Tell them how the crowds went wild, tell them how I hope they shine!" Taylor also shows her understanding to the people she's worked with if they ever need to leave to do something else with their lives, and wanting them to share experiences they had with her to others that they may meet during their travels.
Of course, these are just a couple of the wonderful songs from Taylor Swift's latest album, Speak Now. This album will continue playing on repeat for a lot of time to come, and I cannot wait to hear what is next for Taylor!
