I have a 3.5 year old son that has a tendency to hit when he is angry. I know this is normal behavior but I wanted to find something to help him realize that he cannot hit. We have chosen to take a more positive discipline approach and don't hit or spank him. I did a search on Amazon.com for a good book and came upon the book Hands Are Not For Hitting.

Hands Are Not For Hitting arrived a few days after I ordered it from Amazon.com. The list price is $11.95 but Amazon.com had it for $8.60 plus it qualified for free shipping. The book is published by Free Spirit Publishing, is 40 pages long, and recommended for kids 4-8. The book is soft cover and seems very durable.

The message in Hands Are Not For Hitting is very simple and easy for kids to understand. It reiterates throughout the book that hands are not for hitting. The book lets kids know what their hands are for and some positive ways they can use their hands. The illustrations are done by Marieka Heinlen and are very colorful and entertaining for the kids to look at. The book also has a few interactive parts - such as suggesting that the reader or child being read to gives a high five to someone close or shakes hands.

While I can't claim that this is a miracle book that will stop your child from hitting, it does help get the message across of what hands are for and that hitting is not acceptable. My son is already taking lessons from the book and applying them in everyday situations. I highly recommend this book for preschoolers.
