This was my second trip to the lighthouse in the Sea Pines Plantation of Hilton Head Island, SC. It costs $5 just to enter the plantation. I always thought it was worth it because you could go see the lighthouse and shop at some unique shops right by the lighthouse. There are restaurants right there as well.
I was disappointed that it cost $2.50 to go to the top of the lighthouse this time. There was no fee the last time we went. You walk up the steps yourself. It's not like there is an elevator that needs upkeep. Children under 5 are free and you do get a wristband that is good for the day. I don't know how many people go up multiple times.
It is well lit and you climb a normal width staircase. When we went it was not busy but I think it would be cramped if it were busy. It is 114 steps to the top so be prepared for a walk. It is not bad though. There are penny press machines on the way up. Each one has a different picture so you may want to check them out on the way up and then do them on the way down. It costs 51 cents each time.
There is a gift store at the top that you have to go through to get outside or back downstairs. Watch you children closely because it is really cramped up there. They have a lot of breakables on the path to the door. There were only 6 people total in there and that was too many. I can't imagine it during the summer tourist season.
The view from the top is pretty but not worth the $2.50 per person. This is something we will skip on the next trip to the island. It is just as neat to walk around the docks and look at the ships and you can do that for free!
