Since my mom has been in a nursing home for rehab, after breaking her right foot, her left leg, and her right hip, we have learned a lot about making things more comfortable. Sleeping on a nursing home twin bed, is a far cry from my mom's large king-sized bed at home. But her roommate, who is 83 years old, gave us a really great idea.

Because this is a nursing facility, the mattress is a vinyl material that can be washed and disinfected easily. But a vinyl mattress, with a thin cheap sheet can be very hot. My mom's roommate said that she woke up sweating almost every night. But she showed me how her daughters had bought a fitted twin mattress cover to provide additional padding, as well as a much cooler contact surface. I thought this was a simple, great solution. So while I was shopping for other things at Target, I purchased one of their Basic Fitted Twin Mattress Pads.

It is 100% polyester, machine washable, with a diamond quilted top. It can also be tumble dried. It certainly sounded perfect. However, imagine my horror, as I looked up several reviews on this item after purchasing it, and found that every single person that reviewed it had a problem. (And this was no minor problem.) Everyone shared that once it was washed, the item fell apart. Some said that the sides stuck together and melted in the dryer. Another reviewer said that she washed it, and then dried it on LOW heat, and it still melted and then tore when she tried to put it on the bed. Seven out of seven reviewers on Target's own site gave this item one star out of five! Every one of them reported that it was terrible quality. (If I had only read this before purchasing it!)

If ours falls apart, I will be returning it promptly. If the company is aware of this problem, I wonder why they don't pull the item? This was only a twin size mattress pad, and the cost was very low. Perhaps in the end, you get what you pay for. (Unfortunately, I bought two! One for her to use, and one to replace it when it needs to be washed.) Sigh...I'll get a higher quality mattress cover next time, but I don't think I'll be buying it at Target. (However, if it proves to wash and dry well as advertised, I will report that also in an update.) So stay tuned... I do want to state again, that we have not yet washed the mattress cover.

The idea was a good one though. Sleeping away from home is always a challenge, and sometimes it's easy to overlook something simple, that can contribute greatly to coolness and comfort.
