I like using Valerian when I am tense, especially when I have a migraine. It can often help relax me enough to fall asleep. It also can help ease the tension that builds in my neck/shoulders which in turn can help ease the pain. The problem with Valerian is that it not only does not taste very appealing, it stinks!
I have not found capsule forms of Valerian to be very effective. And I don't care what other herbs you mix it with: it's not appealing. An herbal extract instead has been my answer.
I typically use the Herb Pharm Valerian extract, in part due to the fact that it is organic. The extract still stinks but it takes only drops to get the same effect as say a cup of tea. I've found that by mixing the Valerian extract with orange juice I can drink it down without gagging.
The extract is in a base of alcohol. So if you object to alcohol I would not recommend it.
