I absolutely love my HP ScanJet 4850 scanner, which I use for my eBay business. This flatbed scanner is very easy to use, and has options to scan documents to PDF format, scan multiple images to separate files, scan 3D items, and do optical character recognition. This lightweight scanner is Energy Star compliant and has a high-speed USB 2.0 interface. The scan resolution varies from 12 dpi to 999, 999 enhanced dpi at 100% scaling. This scanner is capable of producing very high resolution scans up to 19, 200 dpi through the HP Solution Center software, yet I find that I rarely need such high resolution. In most cases I find that 200 and 300 dpi are more than adequate, and that 600 is the absolute maximum resolution I need for my business. Higher resolutions are best for scanning very tiny areas of scannable printwork and objects to get the maximum detail. When the resolution is turned up very high for large scans, the file size becomes enormous.
I don't like the software which came with this scanner as much as the software which came with my old scanner, the HP ScanJet 6200 scanner. This software saves all scans when you close the software, not one at a time as the old software did. However the enhanced speed, resolution and ease of use of this scanner were well worth putting up with the quirks of different software. The software package also includes the HP Image Zone and the HP Document Viewer which can help you to view, edit, print, fax, or email your images.
