To start cleaning, all you have to do is press the clean button and off it goes, vacuuming on some sort of mathematical pattern of its own. When it's through, your floors and carpet are clean. It comes with two virtual wall/lighthouses. Virtual wall means that the vacuum will not cross the invisible line that it marks; lighthouse means that the vacuum will sense the barrier between rooms and is designed to spend approx. 20-25 minutes per room. If you have a very large house, you would probably need two Roombas, but it certainly takes care of my very large studio apartment, vacuuming rugs, floors, under beds, under the couch as far as it can get, even in corners. If it can reach it, Roomba will vacuum it. You can even schedule the Roomba to run at a certain time, even while you're away.
One warning: If you have a pet that sheds, I do not recommend that you schedule the Roomba to run while you're away. My cat's hair tends to wrap around the brushes and I have to stop and clean the Roomba halfway through the cleaning. And, if you do not use the Roomba every day, then you should not leave it alone. You would need to empty the dust bin more than once. You run the risk of ruining your Roomba if the dust bin gets too full or if the brush bearings get overheated with carpet fiber or pet hair.
One problem I had: After using the Roomba for about three weeks, one of the arms of the sidebrush broke off. I only had to email the company and they sent me 3 replacement brushes free. I have had this Roomba for almost a year now and this is the only thing close to a problem that I've had. Be sure to register your Roomba online right after you buy it so that if anything goes wrong, they have a record of everything.
