My parent's cat Garfield just passed away and he was 17 years old. When a friend of mine found out, she called to see if my parents would like an autographed 2010 Garfield Calendar? Well, of course they would! So I got the calendar and called my parents. I won't be able to give this to them until next month, but they won't be using it as a "calendar" - to them it will be a constant reminder of an orange cat we all loved and they will hang this up and display Jim Davis' autograph proudly. This is actually their first and only collectible piece and I'm glad it's also something that represents a cat they named after Jim Davis' cartoon character.

The autograph is signed in black Sharpie on the front of the calendar by Artist/Cartoonist Jim Davis. The title of this calendar is "Make Lunch, Not Landfills" 2010 Garfield "Green" Calendar. Each month shows a different way to help be environmentally green and save our earth's resources. I still haven't asked my friend how well she knows Jim Davis, but by the looks of her extensive collections, I'd say pretty well. And I don't want to come across rude by asking just yet, as she also just lost her husband to cancer and their collection was a passion between the two of them. So this collectible calendar is really an honor for my parents to own and it really meant a lot to me that she would give this away.

Jim Davis, as many of you already know, created the whole Garfield craze back in 1978 and I was just starting in high school. I remember us all drawing him for our freetime art school projects and later on movies came out, clothing, all kinds of office supplies, comics and artwork. Garfield was named for Jim's grandfather, "James Garfield Davis".

Garfield is just a jolly, yet discerning cat that most of us picture our own cats to be like. I am thankful that my friend cared enough to part with this collector's piece and give it to my parents.

Thank you Shirl and Dick.

Update On May 31, 2010: The smile on my dad's face when I gave this autographed calendar to him was priceless. He was so excited to open the seals and look at each month. He has never had an autographed product before and this gift really made his day. It was so nice to see his smile when he had been so sad lately over some unfortunate events. Thanks again to my friend Shirl for giving this to my parents. They will cherish it forever and it's a great memory to their beloved cat, Garfield.
