You only have to step off the plane at the Lihue Airport in Kauai to understand what makes The Garden Isle one of Hawaii's most romantic destinations. There is the most amazing fragrance in the air. There is the warmth of the sun and the caress of the trade winds to welcome you. You know right away that you will be able to relax and enjoy what the island has to offer: peace, beauty, and that abundant sense of romance.

Kauai is a small island which makes it easy to explore North, South, East and West. Every compass point on the island offers a different landscape and mood.

My favorite is the North Shore where you will often experience rain squalls, which come and go quickly, leaving the air fresh and the greenery sparkling. The taro fields offer picturesque scenery with the mountains of the island's interior behind them. (These are the views I continue to crave long after vacation has ended!) My favorite beach for simply relaxing, Hanalei Bay is on the North Shore as well. It is a crescent-shaped beach with gorgeous views of the mountains.

The East Shore is where you will want to go to shop. You will enjoy the coconut groves on either side of the road as you travel to and fro in the vicinity of Kapaa. Beaches on the East side of Kauai run the gambit between surfers' dream and kiddies' paradise.

If you catch a rainy day in the North, just head to the South Shore where it is probably a beautiful sunny day. An abundant variety of beaches grace the South Shore as well - some with serenity, others with bluster. From the South Shore, you can access the highway that takes you far up the interior highway to view the amazing Waimea Canyon. This will take you to the higher elevations which have the dubious honor of being named the wettest place on earth!

For solitude and the feeling of being stranded on a desert island, the West Shore is where you can bake in desert heat, but enjoy respite in the ocean waves.

Kauai has something for everyone: golf, site-seeing catamarans, river tubing, horseback riding, helicopter tours, shopping, art galleries, hiking, surfing, paddle boarding, scuba diving, snorkeling, fine dining, luaus, lei-making, botanical gardens, and, my favorite - relaxing.

Warm weather, beautiful scenery, a laid back life style... all these give Kauai a relaxed atmosphere that makes it our favorite destination for a romantic getaway.
