I was looking for a new paella pan when I came across this cute paella kit online from LaTienda.com, an online Spanish food merchant. Liking the appearance of the entire kit, and noting that it came with both a nice large paella pan along with some saffron, I decided to order it. The kit is a great gift for yourself or any foodie in your life, trully is a complete package.
The kit itself contains a generously large (15 inch) and traditional paella pan, enough saffron, Calasparra rice, smoked paprika, piquillo peppers, extra virgin olive oil and seafood buillon to make your first dish of paella. All of the ingredients are gourmet, from very well known merchants and grocers in Spain- and honestly to find these items here in the States would take a lot of looking and running around.
Even though I already have my own method of cooking paella, family recipe, I decided to follow the instructions that came with the kit. There were actually several tips in there that I didn't know about or that I had somewhat performed without understanding why. Now I understand how important some of the steps are. Suffice to say, the recipe directions are very easy to follow, but since paella is a new dish to most I suggest reading through them first.
The paella pan suited my needs, but I was a little dissapointed by the handles. They are very thin and hard to hold on to when you have a pan full of paella in a heavy steel pan. Other than the handles it performed beautifully, I wasn't at all worried about how evenly the rice was cooking and could let the pan do its thing in peace.
An excellent gift. Foodies will love this, and seasoned Spanish cooks will definitely love the goodies that all come with the kit.
