I recently had my first baby and am breastfeeding her. I had heard horror stories about how breastfeeding mother's nipples tend to get dry, cracked, and really sore during the first few weeks. I was afraid this was going to happen to me and it would hurt so much that I would want to give up, but I knew I really wanted to stick with breastfeeding.
At the hospital, they gave me a tube of this Lanolin cream and said to use it after every feeding. It has been a blessing! I don't think I would be making it through as well as I am without it. I was happy they gave me a whole tube at the hospital, but I ordered another one when I got home. I think this first tube I am on will probably last for another month or 2, but I don't want to take a change of running out! I thought it would be a good idea to keep a tube in the diaper bag too.
This Lanolin cream is thick like Vaseline, but is made of 100% all natural and safe Lanolin only. I love the fact that I do not have to clean it off before the next feeding, it is completely safe for the baby. It coats very well and is usually absorbed by the time I feed again (about 3 hours later). All you need is a little dot about the size of a small pea to coat one nipple area, so a small tube will last for a while.
So far, I have not had any problems with dryness, cracking, or sores with using this Lanolin cream. I plan on continuing to use this cream the whole time I nurse just to make sure I prevent any problems. I believe one 2oz tube costs around $7.00, and it is WELL worth the price!
