Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is a California fashion and beauty expert who favors pink and dates the hottest guy around, Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis). When Warner invites her to a fancy restaurant, Elle is thrilled, she is certain that her boyfriend is about to propose. Wrong: Warner carefully explains that they need to go their separate ways because he is going to Harvard, and Elle is not the right kind of a girl for him. Basically, he lets her know that she is not smart enough for him. Devastated, Elle decides to prove him wrong and win him back - by going to Harward Law School herself.
I have to admit I did not like Elle at first; she did come across as an airhead blonde with no substance - perhaps that was done on purpose. However, my opinion soon changed as she showed her good character in several situations, genuinely caring for people around her, and later on proved to be just as smart and capable of studying the law as other students. Making her kind and sincere was a good move on the scriptwriter's part: I personally wouldn't care for Elle's smarts if she was an arrogant meanie as some other girls on campus.
The movie is light, clean, entertaining, and definitely not without substance. I recommend it for a fun night with friends, a date, or family viewing.
