I recently had the opportunity to stay at Letchworth State Park in Castille, NY. I was arriving after office hours so I called ahead. I was told that that would not be a problem and that the cabin I had rented would be unlocked for my arrival. Being from out of state I was unaware that the park was over 20 miles long. From the maps I had viewed online, all of the camping areas looked to be together, however this was not the case. All of the camping areas were together except the section I had booked in which was across a mammoth gorge, 15 miles away from the office or other campers.
Upon arriving very late at night I drove around looking for this section as it was not marked. I finally had to go to a gas station and was informed that I had to go outside of the park and about 15 to 20 miles in the opposite direction in order to find this section.
I finally found it, only wanting to go to sleep after driving for 8 hours. I got the door open only to find out that the interior locks were broken. The 2 cots in the small 5 foot by 8 foot cabin were both wet. The cabin also smelled funny and had names and other things carved all over the walls.
The shower area was not much better sporting only a thin shower curtain and screen door to keep somebody out.
To be fair, the other cabin and tent sites that were actually near the office looked well maintained and the park itself has a lot to offer for nature lovers, hikers and history buffs.
I would recommend this park with this stipulation, make sure you know where the cabin or tent site is located prior to arrival.
