These last few months there have been two crime shows other than CSI that have snagged my attention: Life and The Mentalist. As you can tell from the title, I will be talking about Life. My problem with the TV show "Life" was that there was a lot of the backstory that I just couldn't pick up. Why were everyone looking at Crews sideways? What were Reese's problems?
It was fun watching a red-head (male) and brunette (female) looking for clues and shooting the bad guys, but I wanted to find out what I had missed. And yes, it was an impulse buy. I found it in Best Buy as I was looking at "Monk."
Anyway, this DVD set of season one was everything I wanted. The background story that I was missing was very important in understanding Crews authority problems. Crews was in prison for twelve years for a crime he did not commit. Part of his motivation is that he is looking for the real killers of his best friend and partner.
Also, Reese has a problem with drug and alcohol addiction. It is not pretty, but points to a "problem" that "might" be in our undercover investigators today. What do you do if you are undercover and are trying to be one of the bad guys? How deep undercover do you go? In Reese's case, she has supervisors that want her to succeed ... and to get control of her addictions.
Another twist is that Crew has a good idea that Reese's father set him up to take the fall for the murder of his partner.
As you can tell there is a lot of emotional stewing as well as crime solving in this story line. I had a great time watching it. I am just hoping that this series "Life" starts up again at NBC. If not, I will be looking for more seasons.
