Before winter set in I learned about the importance of vitamin D supplements. It turns out the RDAs (recommended daily allowances) for vitamin D are all too low and that each individual should be receiving about 35 IUs per pound of body weight. For children, recommendations are about 400 IUs daily, but for my 35 pound kids that is about a third of what they should be getting. Because vitamin D is so important for a healthy immune system, I wanted to find a supplement that my kids enjoyed taking.
I tried Lil Critters Vitamin D gummies first and have not turned anywhere else. Each bear offers 400 IU of vitamin D so I give my kids four daily (two in the morning and two at night). I have eaten these and they taste really good, and are soft and chewy. You would never know they are vitamins. Armed with 1600 IU of vitamin D daily my kids have fought off several colds this winter (they have gotten sniffles, but have not lapsed into anything that keeps them home).
There are a couple drawbacks to these vitamins. I have to give my kids four of them, which makes me wish they came in higher doses. Unfortunately we have gone through several bottles this winter because they do eat so many (and they are not cheap). This also means they are intaking a bit more sugar than I prefer, but I do make sure to brush their teeth fairly soon after eating these, because they are sticky.
Best part is that my kids remind me each day for their vitamins. They are made with natural ingredients, which adds to my willingess to purchase these again and again.
