I like to put live plants in my freshwater fish aquarium. They give a natural and beautiful look to the tank, and the fish seem to feel more at home swimming among the plant fronds.
Petsmart usually has a great selection of live plants at various prices, and I have had very good luck with the plants I've purchased there. At one time I used plant food in my tanks with live plants, but I haven't done that in a while. My plants are still growing like crazy. Live plants look so much nicer in a tank than plastic plants and/or a lot of gaudy decorations, though I admit at one time I had things of that nature in my fish tank as well. I've reached the point where I want my tank to have a more natural look, and the live aquarium plants certainly give the tank a natural look.
There are different plants to choose from. Some are hardier than others, some grow tall and some are shorter and more bushy. A variety of different plants in a fish tank look beautiful, and the fish do enjoy swimming among them.
Live plants are no extra work in a tank. I simply choose what I want for a certain look in my tank, plant the roots in the gravel, and let the plants grow. What a nice sight to look at, and fun for the fish as well.
