When I bought my house it had no kitchen! The prior owner was in the middle of remodeling the house when he got sick. I was on a very limited budget for finishing the work on the house, so I shopped around to find the best deals on everything. I found that Menard's unfinished oak cabinets were the best deal for the kitchen. They are a great cabinet at a great price! I bought 6 wall cabinets and 5 base cabinets for a total of $806. The cabinets can be bought right off the floor, so I didn't have to wait for an order to come in. The only downfall is that there is a very limited selection of sizes and only one style of door to choose from. I was able to put together a kitchen design that worked with the sizes they had. The only thing I had trouble with was the sink base. One size was too big and the other too small, so I bought another base cabinet that was the size I needed and removed the drawer and reattached the drawer front to the cabinet and I had a perfectly sized sink base!
The doors and front framework are solid oak, but the rest is constructed of particleboard. They sell oak panels separately that can be attached to the sides of the cabinets that are visible to hide the particleboard, and so the sides can be stained to match the rest of the cabinet. Although the construction of the cabinet is particleboard, they are surprisingly sturdy. The drawers open and close smoothly on metal drawer glides.
My parents and I installed them, with no problems. I had one door that had a defect in the wood. I removed the door and took it back to the store, they exchanged it out with another cabinet, no problem. I stained the cabinets and they look beautiful!
