I was eagerly awaiting the dvd release of Metalocalypse, one of my favorite not-for-kids cartoons on Adult Swim, and this first season dvd set did not disappoint.
Metalocalypse follows the misadventures of a ludicrously successful fictitious black metal band known as Dethklok. Metalheads such as myself will appreciate the many in-jokes and references to various figures within the genre, but even fans of the easy listening station should be able to appreciate the character driven humor, though some may be turned off by the sometims extremely crude (yet genuinely funny) cheap gags.
The season one set consists of two dvds packaged in a black and silver slip case. The packaging could easily pass for that of a real heavy metal album. The 20 fifteen-minute episodes fit easily in fine quality across the two dvds with room to spare for many hidden "easter egg" extras, some of which are of comparable quality to the aired episodes of the show. However, the lack of creator commentary or other typical extras is a disappointment, and the English language subtitle track is frequently inaccurate to the spoken dialogue.
Despite these flaws, Metalocalypse Season One would be a worthwhile purchase for fans of the show, and the hidden content makes it a must have.
